    Description

Before the advent of “modern” air conditioning, the Chinese developed an ingenious method for providing relief from the hottest days of summer. Vented chests were filled with ice to provide some cooling in the home. Those in the upper castes, of course, expected their ice chests to compliment the decor and splendor of the rest of their furnishings. The origin of this ice chest is unknown. The age is conservatively guessed at early 1900s, but it is likely oder than that. While not as elaborate, perhaps not as old as other ice chests that have sold at auction (Christies’ sold one for 7,000!!) Another pair, very similar to this one sold in 2014 for 00. We believe that the price, JUST REDUCED FROM 0.00 to 0.00, is very appropriate, based upon rarity and condition; however, intelligent offers will certainly be seriously considered. The condition is appropriate for the age. The wood color varies, indicating the potential for having been restored some time in its long history.
