    Description

A 19th century Chinese cabinet, known as a “Wedding Cabinet”,
    made
with Ming Dynasty simplicity. In China, these were made by the families of brides
as a dowry, with their size and embellishment an indication of the family’s wealth and social prominence.
This cabinet is handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with its doors and side panels made from strips of bamboo.
The structure is consistent with traditional handcrafted Chinese furniture: four easily removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue or mechanical joining device.
The center doors feature a large, round bronze faceplate and etched bronze pulls that open outward to reveal two shelves (the lower one removable), four drawers and great storage possibilities. The smaller doors, which also open, have interior wooden latches to secure them.
The hinge covers are carved floral motifs and the apron is elegantly shaped. The large round faceplate on the doors depict the moon.
In Chinese tradition, the full moon is a symbol of peace, prosperity and family reunion.
This solid piece, which has been well-maintained in its original natural finish, would make a stunning statement in a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar.
